About BEAR Testing Laboratory:

BEAR Testing Laboratory is an independent, commercial testing laboratory, providing a wide range of materials engineering and testing services, covering all of Northern California.

BEAR is a 100 percent minority-owned business, solely owned and operated by Neal Kanaya, a California Registered Civil Engineer. Formerly the laboratory department manager at Hales Testing Laboratories and Dynamic Consultants, Inc. (DCI), Mr. Kanaya has fifteen years of experience in the testing/inspection business, which includes commercial, Caltrans, Division of the State Architect (DSA) and Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD) projects. From the level of field technician to managing the daily operation of the laboratory, Mr. Kanaya has worked on many types of construction including concrete, masonry, steel, timber and earthwork.

Among his professional memberships, Mr. Kanaya participates actively on national technical committees such as ASTM C-15 Masonry, ASTM E-28 Mechanical Testing, AWS B-2 Welder and Welding Procedure Qualification, ICRI Quality Control of Epoxy Injection, ICRI Bond Evaluation of Concrete Repairs, and ICRI Repair of Post-tensioned Concrete. Mr. Kanaya serves on the Professional Practices Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) and was also the 1996-97 chairman of the SEAONC Construction Quality Assurance Committee. He has been a speaker at seminars for construction materials, concrete repair, and welding procedures.
